Rosseg is only about a 7-minute drive from Velden, between Lake Wörthersee and Lake Faaker. This place will especially appeal to families with children thanks to the Rosegg Animal Park, one of Austria's largest garden mazes, as well as the Keltenwelt Frög open-air museum.

The extensive Rosegg Animal Park around the old castle ruins is home to more than 300 wild and domestic animals, including bison, kangaroos, mountain monkeys, ibex, lynx, rare species of deer and white-tailed deer.

All visitors have the opportunity to feed the pets living in the park with special food. Walking through the park itself is also full of adventure, as some animals like peacocks, deer, and ibex roam freely here.

A special highlight is the petting zoo located next to the large children's playground, where children can admire ponies, miniature donkeys, miniature goats, rabbits and other small animals.

Next up is the Rosegg Garden Labyrinth, located between Rosegg Castle and Rosegg Animal Park.

The hedge is impressively made of more than 3,000 hornbeams and is about a kilometer long.

It's a great place to take a leisurely stroll, as well as a place to test your sense of direction and try to find your way out of the maze as quickly as possible.

In the middle of the labyrinth there is a tower with a beautiful view of the castle and the surrounding area. At the end, visitors can visit the cozy castle cafe.

Last but not least is the Celtic World (Keltenwelt Frög) open-air museum, which is located a little less than two kilometers from Rosegg Castle.

At the Keltenwelt Frög open-air museum, everyone can learn and see a lot of information about how people lived in the Iron Age. With special children's tours, children's activity days and puzzle rallies, the Celtic World becomes an adventure for the whole family.

Visit the Wishing Tree in Kathreinkogel

Kathreinkogel is located 6 km southeast of Velden near Scheifling and is one of the most popular hiking spots around Lake Wörthersee.

An ideal place for an easy, idyllic hike that will last about an hour. Katreinkögel is a 772 m high mountain and stands out along the western bay of Lake Wörthersee with its peculiar shape.

There is an old Catholic church on the hill with great views of the surrounding area, and near the church there is a small museum of archaeological excavations from the Neolithic and Bronze Age.

But its main highlight is Austria's only wishing tree at the top of the hill.

There, anyone who has measured the way to that point can write their wishes, dreams or something else on small wooden plates and hang them on the tree (it is recommended to prepare the wooden plate and rope in advance).

The wishing tree hike starts at the Katharinaweg (Schiefling am See) and leads past green meadows through dense beech forests to the summit. Will the wishing tree keep its promise? Try it once!

Rauschelesee and Magic Forest

Rauschelesee is a small bathing paradise in unspoilt nature surrounded by greenery. Located in the Keutschach lake valley south of Wörthersee, about 7 km from Maria Wörth, 10 km from Klagenfurt and very close to Keutschach am See.

This place is definitely an excellent place for families with children as well as hikers. Rauschelesee offers a family-friendly beach with a boardwalk, plenty of green meadows to relax under the shade of trees, a huge children's playground, and an excellent restaurant, while hikers can discover the lovely hiking trails.

Near Rauschelesee there is also a forest playground - Magic Forest Rauschelesee (Zauberwald am Rauschelesee).

The Magic Forest is an approximately 10,000 m² adventure playground for families with children where the attractions are mainly made of wood, you will find: Noah's Ark, bear cave, fairy tale characters, flying witches, talking trees, singing witches, a 15 m long slide and much more.

Admire views from Gerlitzen Alps

Only about 20 minutes from Velden is Lake Ossiach, which in turn is home to the Gerlitzen Alps mountain railway station, which takes you to the top of Gerlitzen.

The Gerlitzen mountain is the perfect starting point for hikes with fantastic views of the Carinthian lake landscape.

A combination of two lifts - the Kanzelbahn (gondola) and the Gipfelbahn (chair lift) will take you from the valley of Lake Ossiach all the way to the Gerlitzen peak at an altitude of 1,911 meters.
