4. Visit Caldera de Bandama (Caldera Bandama)
The Caldera de Bandama and nearby Pico de Bandama are two excellent places to visit and are about 30 minutes away from Las Palmas by car.
As the name suggests, the Caldera is a volcanic crater, created during volcanic activity more than 4000 years ago, and is one of the biggest craters in the Canary Islands.
Known as the Bandama Natural Monument, which is part of the Tafira Protected Landscape, this crater is situated in the middle of the municipalities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Brigida and Telde.

Things to do and see at Caldera de Bandama
Caldera de Bandama is the most popular spot for hikers and panorama view lovers. There are two hike routes in the Caldera de Bandama.
The first trail leads directly into the crater. It starts at the bottom of Pico de Bandama, through a gate where there is a bar/restaurant for refreshments after the walk down and back.
There you will also find Caldera de Bandama parking. The hike takes approx 2 h to go down, explore and back. The trail is quite steep and rough, therefore good walking footwear and drinking water are highly recommended.
There are a number of paths around the bottom of the crater which allow the visitor to view the old farm buildings and very varied flora. There are numerous caves in the walls of the crater which were occupied in prehistoric times. In later times the bottom of the crater was occupied by several farming families.
It is possible to see several stone threshing floors, a wooden wine press and a number of stone water channels which give an idea of the kind of agricultural activity the crater supported in times past.
But go there early, because the aforementioned gate is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., of course if you don't want to spend the night in one of the caves.
Nearby, driving up the winding road is the 569 m (1,867 ft) Pico de Bandama volcano, the highest point in the area and one of the focal points of the eruption that caused the Caldera de Bandama below. The last eruption of the Pico de Bandama volcano was about more than 2000 years ago.
Despite its relatively low altitude, the volcano is popular for its unrivaled panoramic views. Best of all, you get to the top by car, so it's effortless to reach, especially in hot weather. From here you will get great views of the ocean, mountains, countryside, Las Palmas, and of course the Caldera de Bandama without having to hike around and into it.
Moreover, this is where the second hiking trail begins. Just below the Pico de Bandama car park there is an entry point to the walk around the crater perimeter.
The path is narrow and steep and rough in places, but the view is awesome since it always goes atop of the ridge. The full circuit takes roughly two hours.
Again, strong footwear and drinking water are advisable.
Alternatively, you can get the same views starting this trail from The Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas, and maybe even play a round of golf, as this is the oldest golf course in all of Spain.

5. Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo
One of the most popular attractions in Gran Canaria is the Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo.
Located in the northeast of Gran Canaria just 7km/4 miles from Las Palmas, this stunning botanical garden covers over 27 hectares with at least 500 species of plants endemic to the Canary Islands and beyond.

There are two entrances here - TAFIRA entrance (upper part) and the El Dragonal road (lower part), with parking at both entrances. Basically, it doesn't matter which one you choose, but it is worth keeping in mind that the entrance to the lower gardens will be more convenient if we are talking about parking spaces (there will be a lot more of them here), steps and very steep paths, and access with wheelchairs.
On the other hand, the entrance to the upper gardens has steep steps and stairs, which is not suitable for everyone, but there is a cafe here, which is not in the lower gardens, as well as a wonderful view of the surroundings and Las Palmas.
While walking along these charming paths of the botanical garden, where the main attention is paid to the flora of the Canary Islands, you will see huge cacti and succulents, thousands of years old and huge trees, beautiful flowers, various fountains, charming bridges - wooden and stone, ponds with colorful fish, lizards and croaking frogs, and much more.
The paths are lovely all around the Gran Canaria Botanic Gardens but as mentioned before they can be quite steep and some have steps so make sure you wear comfortable shoes and don't forget to bring drinking water as it's quite a walk which it can take even more than three hours if you want to explore everything.

Fataga - the historical Village
The beautiful village of Fataga is located in the so-called Valley of a Thousand Palms, a picturesque setting of steep cliffs, fruit trees and palm trees - in the south of the island of Gran Canaria, about 30 minutes from the beach resort of Maspalomas and an hour's drive from the city of Las Palmas.

This is a great destination for the whole family thanks to the fact that it is isolated from the ocean, plus the site is equipped with several amenities, such as a restaurant, sun terrace, and parking. You can take a leisurely stroll from the port of Puerto De Agaete to reach Las Salinas.
