2. The Unexpected Beauty of Wind Cave

Tucked away in the heart of Tenerife is a hidden gem known as Cueva del Viento, or Wind Cave. This cave is not only one of the largest lava tubes in the world, but it's also home to some of the most fascinating and unique rock formations you'll ever see.

A Brief History of Wind Cave

The cave was formed around 17 to 20 million years ago during a time when Tenerife was nothing more than a volcanic landscape. Over time, lava began flowing from the volcano and into the sea, creating long tubes in the process. Eventually, the outer layer of the lava cooled and solidified while the inner core remained molten. This created an extensive system of tunnels and chambers, some of which are large enough to fit a bus!

What Makes a Wind Cave So Special?

While there are many lava caves in Tenerife (and indeed, all over the world), what makes Wind Cave so special is the combination of its size and its beauty. The cave is home to some truly stunning rock formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, columnar jointing, and lava flows.

In addition, due to its location near the coast, the cave is constantly filled with the sound of crashing waves, which only adds to its ethereal atmosphere.

Wind Cave is also home to a surprisingly diverse array of flora and fauna. The constant humidity in the air means that mosses, ferns, and lichens can thrive, while bats roost in the darkness. In fact, over 20% of all bat species found in Europe can be found in this one cave!

How to Visit Wind Cave

If you're interested in exploring this natural wonder for yourself, there are a few things you should know. First of all, cuevadelviento.com offers guided tours led by experienced cavers who know the ins and outs of Wind Cave like the back of their hand. These tours typically last around 2 hours and include round-trip transportation from your hotel.

Secondly, make sure to wear comfortable shoes as you'll be doing a fair bit of walking (and possibly climbing). Thirdly, bring along a jacket or sweater as it can get chilly inside the cave.

29. Hiking Taganana in Tenerife – The Most rewarding 7.5 km you will ever hike!

We have hiked a lot of different trails on the island of Tenerife, but if we had to pick just one – it would be the hike from Taganana to Afur. Why? It’s rewarding, it’s varied and it’s only 7.5 kilometers! In this blog post, we will tell you all about this incredible hike, what you can expect and why it is my favorite.

Taganana is a small village located in the north-east of Tenerife. It’s a typical Canarian village with white houses and a church. Afur is even smaller, it doesn’t really have anything apart from a couple of houses and a restaurant. The hike starts in Taganana and quickly ascends into the forest.

You will hike through forests of Pine and Laurel trees which provide natural shade and make the air refreshingly cool. After about an hour of hiking, you will reach the highest point of the trail at 600 meters. Here you will have views over Taganana village as well as down to the coast. But the best views are still yet to come! From here, the trail descends towards Afur where you will get sweeping panoramas over Puerto de la Cruz, El Teide (Tenerife’s volcano) and all the way to La Gomera!

This is definitely one of the most rewarding hikes on the island with very little effort required. We guarantee that you won’t be disappointed.

32. Visit the Mueca Festival in Tenerife

Ready to add some excitement to your May holiday? This Canarian carnival is one of the liveliest and most colorful festivals in all of Spain, and it's well worth checking out if you're in the area.

What Is the Mueca Festival?

The Mueca Festival is a five-day extravaganza that takes place every spring in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital city. The festival gets its name from the muecas (puppets) that serve as its mascots, and it includes a parade, live music, street performances, and plenty of chances to eat, drink, and be merry. In other words, it's the perfect way to shake off those winter blues and welcome the warmer months.

If you're planning on attending the festival, be prepared for crowds—each year, it attracts tens of thousands of revelers from all over Spain (and beyond). Fortunately, there's no shortage of things to do and see, so you'll never find yourself bored or at a loss for something to do. From watching the puppets parade through the streets to dancing the night away at one of the many open-air concerts, there's something for everyone at the Mueca Festival.

Tips for Mueca Festival

If you're new to the Mueca Festival (or any carnival, for that matter), here are a few tips to help you make the most of your experience:
1. Dress up! Many festival goers wear costumes or decorative masks; joining in on the fun is half the point.
2. Bring cash. While some vendors accept credit cards, others only take cash—and you don't want to get caught without enough money to buy food or souvenirs.

Whether you're a seasoned carnival goer or this is your first time celebrating with puppets (yes, puppets!) in tow, the Mueca Festival is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Tenerife.
