The most famous landmarks in France can be listed even by a child, who will put Disneyland at the top of the list, but also the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre Museum, or the Cote d'Azur.

France does not need P.R. being, from a tourist point of view, a destination you can only talk about superlatively: the most beautiful cities in the world, the best museums, the most exotic beaches in Europe, the highest mountains, the most sophisticated dishes, etc.

Paris is the main point of France and from there most travelers begin to develop their admiration for this extraordinary country.

The most famous landmark for both Paris and France, which had and still has great notoriety. Today, the Eiffel Tower is considered a wonder of the modern world that offers impressive views of Paris.

A word of advice: climb the Eiffel Tower towards the end of the day to capture the beauty of Paris both during the day and at night.

If you go to Paris you must visit the Eiffel Tower. Going to Paris and not visiting the Eiffel Tower is simply inconceivable. In fact, this attraction in Paris can be seen from almost any point in the city.

From the Eiffel Tower, you will not have the most spectacular view in Paris, but it is definitely a place you have to go to because of its architecture and grandeur.

What you can find in the Eiffel Tower?
The first level - is at a height of 57 m. It can be reached by elevator or by climbing the 360 steps.
The second level - is at a height of 115 m. Between the first and second levels are 700 steps.
The second level can also be reached by elevator.
The third level - is at a height of 276 m. The panorama from this level is amazing, stretching up to 80 km.
The names of 72 French personalities are engraved by the builder Gustave Eiffel.

The Eiffel Tower can also be visited at night. It is not crowded and the night panorama of Paris is impressive.

2. Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is another famous landmark in France. Actually, is one of the most beautiful and harmonious Gothic buildings in the whole of France. It is by far the most visited architectural monument in all of Europe.

The symbol and emblem of Paris, the cathedral stands out for its unmistakable facade, between two tall towers, plus its Gothic style, considered one of the prototypes of the architecture of that time.

The exterior of the cathedral
On the facade, you will immediately notice the presence of three portals:
On the right, the oldest, the portal of St. Anne is represented by a statue of the virgin throne, in the typical style of the twelfth century, when the sculptural technique was inspired by metal works.
The left portal (and that of the Virgin) and the central portal (of the judgment) date from 1200 and are more monumental than the previous ones.
Above the portals you can see the gallery of kings, and statues from the nineteenth century, largely destroyed during the revolution and later restored by Viollet le Duc and Lassus.
Above is the Galerie de Chiméres, which closes the façade that stretches between the two side towers. Obviously, there are also the inevitable gargoyles: monstrous entities tasked with protecting the church, the faithful, and the city.

The interior, divided into five rooms, stretches over a length of about 128 meters, a width of 48 meters, and a height of about 33 meters. Seven chapels on each side and fifteen apses in front.

3. Mont Saint-Michel

Mont Saint-Michel, one of the major landmarks in France, is a rocky island located in Normandy, at the mouth of the river Couesnon, near the town of Avranches. The highest point of the island is the tower at the top of the tower, which rises 170 meters above sea level. Currently, less than 50 people live on this island.

Mont Saint-Michel is connected to land by a passage, which can be reached on foot in 30 minutes, by bus (free), or by carriage (extra charge).

If you get here by car, there is a fairly large car park near the beginning of the pedestrian road. You can find the price list here. The parking fee was a bit steep, in my opinion.
It would be great to visit the island in the morning and/or at dusk because the rest of the time it gets crowded with tourists.

Access to the island is free, but to visit the abbey you have to pay 10 euros. It will be worth every penny. There are over 20 rooms that you can see in the complex.

4. Louvre Museum

7. Notre-Dame de Reims

The equivalent of Westminster Abbey in England, Reims Cathedral was the church where many French monarchs were crowned.

The Notre Dame Cathedral in Reims, with its Palais du Tau, is one of the most popular landmarks in France for both history buffs and ordinary tourists who want to admire impressive buildings.

And the fact that it is only an hour and a half by car from Paris or 45 minutes by train, makes this place a must-see destination for travelers.

My main stop in Reims was a new introduction to the history, this time visiting the famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Reims. As an exterior architecture, it reminded me of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

8. Dune du Pilat

We leave aside any syrupy Parisian presentation, we leave for another time the pampering of varietal wines, we leave even the impressive architecture and we focus on uniqueness, on places less known but which impress at first sight.

And here in France, nature has given us a corner of the Sahara, a very important landmark in France, a corner of Gobi or Victoria. Not many have presented France as having the largest sand dune in Europe - Dune du Pilat - (Pilate's Dune).

Located 10 km south of Arcachon, Dune du Pilat is the largest sand dune in Europe, with a height of 110 meters, and a length of approx. 3 km and a width of 500 meters.

Useful info The names found in travel guides and even on road signs in the area are several, namely Dune du Pyla, Dune du Pylat, or Dune du Pilat. They all refer to the same dune, but the correct form is Dune du Pilat.
The dune moves slowly inland, advancing every year by one to 5 meters.
Dune du Pilat can be visited in any season of the year.
The road to the dune passes through a large pine forest, making you almost wonder if its existence is true.
At the edge of the forest, there is a large parking lot, from which you walk about 100 meters to the dune.
On the dune, you can simply climb through the sand, or on some wooden stairs (there are over 100 steps), built especially for this purpose.

9. The Basilica of Sacred Heart

Paris has a heart. A sacred heart. On the hill of Montmartre is the famous Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre (in translation "Basilica of the Sacred Heart"), also called Vœu national ("National Covenant"), which with 10 million pilgrims and tourists a year is the second monument of France, by the number of visitors, after the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral.

It is said that on a clear day, visibility is up to 30 km. The entrance to the basilica is free, and the ascent to the dome costs 6 euros per adult and 4 euros per child.

10. Mont Blanc

One of the most famous landmarks in France with almost 5 million curious visitors a year (people coming for the first time and returning), Mont Blanc is perhaps the most beloved area of France.

Mont Blanc (or "White Mountain", translated from French) is the highest mountain in the Alps and is located on the border between France and Italy, where it is called Monte Bianco. Mont Blanc peak, however, belongs to the French territory.

How can you climb Mont Blanc and what other facilities do you find in the area?
Because it is so visited, there are several ways to climb Mont Blanc, but not to the top.
There are routes for buses, trains, cable cars, chairlifts, or even for walking, for the bravest.
As you might have expected, the area around the mountain, and even some towards the top of Mont Blanc, have turned into some tourist attractions.
You can choose to stay at hundreds of chalets, villas, or hotels with restaurants. Even if you don't want to climb to the top, you can relax and enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains.

You can sit in your room with family, friends, or your loved one with tea or hot chocolate in your hand. You can read, you can talk to your loved ones, can take pictures of the landscape or you can try various games. However, if you want to explore, and exercise, and you like adrenaline, you can try various sports.

Sports you can try on a trip to Mont Blanc On Mont Blanc, you will find trails for extreme sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and mountaineering.
Whether you climb the mountain to slide on the snow, or you want to reach the top, you will have fun and experience unique sensations.

However, you should know that as the altitude towards the top of the mountain increases, only professionals should rush, because, in addition to the thermal discomfort you may feel if you are not equipped enough, the routes are quite difficult, especially for beginners.

Sports that are well worth experiencing in Mont Blanc:
Skiing Advanced skiers can start the route right from the top of the mountain, but under no circumstances should those with less experience try this.

Snowboarding Snowboarding is another sport that can be successfully practiced in Mont Blanc. You can practice this activity on the same ski trails.
Prepare your clothes, pair of boots, snowboard, ties, snowboard helmet, and goggles, and feel the adrenaline gliding on the snow of one of the most famous mountains! It is definitely something you can be proud of!

Rock climbing So, this is also possible on Mont Blanc, especially at that altitude. It is recommended to practice this activity when the temperatures are not very low. Be careful, though, because if you don't have enough experience, your adventure may end in a horrible way.

If you are at the beginner level, it would be best to climb only areas with low altitudes. But, if you are one of the experts in this sport, you could try routes almost to the top.

11. Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg

This famous landmark in France is known as one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in Europe. It has a height of 142 m and is located on the site of a former Roman temple.

The cathedral successfully contributes to the history of Gothic sculpture. The south façade has a remarkable column of angels. The statues on the Gothic façade embody the Prophets, Virgins, virtues, and vices. And the interior of the cathedral lives up to expectations, completing the Gothic exterior.

Cathedral square hosts the famous Strasbourg Christmas Market every year. Notre Dame Cathedral can be visited every day between 07.00-11.20 and 12.35-19.00.

It is located in Cathedral Square, in the old part of Strasbourg, known as Grande Île. Access is free.

The Astronomical Clock is the most famous detail of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Strasbourg. Indeed, it is something unseen. It has an impressive height, and the most attractive part is how its creators combined religious characters and the struggle between good and evil over time.

Every hour of the day is represented by a wooden statuette of an apostle. Every 60 minutes, Jesus Himself appears, announcing the passing of the clock through a new triumph over death, suggestively represented by a carved wooden skeleton.

12. Fontainebleau Castle

Fontainebleau Castle is huge, with over 1500 rooms and 130 ha. the area around it. It is the only royal and imperial castle in France inhabited uninterruptedly for 700 years.

Napoleon Bonaparte called it the true home of kings and the castle of the centuries. Fontainbleau Castle is a mosaic of buildings transformed and adapted over the centuries by kings who lived here.

Royal castle or imperial palace, Fontainebleau is presented today as a model residence for opulently furnished apartments. Four museums have been arranged successively between its walls since the end of the 19th century, constituting a huge space for the delight of art lovers.

Fontainebleau Castle can be visited free of charge if you buy the Museum Pass (with which you can visit over 60 important tourist attractions in Paris and beyond, including: Versailles Palace, Louvre Museum, Orsay Museum, Arc de Triomphe, etc.).

To get to Fontainbleau you have to take a train from Gare de Lyon to Fontainebleau Avon (trains to Fontainebleau Avon leave every half hour, and the cost of a two-way train ticket is 15 euros, the journey time is 40 minutes).

From the train station take a bus to Chateau and in 10 minutes you arrive in front of the gates of Fontainebleau castle (the cost of a trip is 2 euros).

If you want to visit everything that can be visited in Fontainebleau Castle, it will take at least 4-5 hours, but it is worth it. Fontainebleau Castle was transformed into a museum in 1927, and since 1981 it is a UNESCO monument.

13. Centre Pompidou

Today, the Pompidou Center is one of the most visited and well-known monuments in Paris. There is no cultural map of the world that does not appear.

From its origins - the official inauguration took place on January 31, 1977 - until today, more than 100 million visitors have crossed its threshold.

The museum and its exhibitions are largely constantly changing. The arrangement of the works on the 4th floor allows the resumption of art history from the 1960s to the present day, with over 600 works by 200 artists (continuously updated).

All the great artistic movements are represented, with works ranging from fine arts to architecture, from design to photography.

On the 5th floor are exhibited works from the period between 1905 and 1960. Also, here it will be possible to see the works of the great masters who laid the foundations of modern art. All artistic currents are celebrated, from Fauvism to Cubism, from abstractionism to Dadaism.

14. The New Bridge (Pont Neuf)

Paradoxically, the Pont Neuf, meaning the new bridge, is the oldest bridge in Paris and has its place among the historical landmarks in France. It is the most famous bridge in the capital of France, and together with Pont Alexandre III, one of the most beautiful.

As you are not allowed to make changes to a UNESCO monument, in 2017, Pont Neuf was also "dewormed" by the "padlocks of love", after they endangered with their weight the Pont des Arts and other bridges in Paris. Authorities say they have freed cultural heritage from a burden and eliminated a risk to the safety of passers-by.

15. Palace of Versailles

17. The Walls of Carcassonne - Robin Hood's city

Carcassonne is located in the southwest of France, 800 km from Paris, a famous landmark in France being noted for the medieval city guarded by walls in the sixth, seventh and eighth centuries.

One of the most important attractions of this city is Cité, the fortress with strong roots in history, which was part of the movie Robin Hood. Moreover, boardgames fans could recognize this city by the name of the famous game inspired by this city.

The entrance to the fortress is free. Only the castle and a few museums require entrance tickets, but otherwise, you can go anytime.

Beyond the walls are hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops. A few houses in the fortress are even inhabited, being permanent residents there.

Carcassonne is a very interesting area that is well worth a visit by the approximately 3 million tourists who cross its borders every year.

Walking through the medieval city with its small and winding alleys, with small buildings or on the contrary impressive, you will be able to imagine what life was like for those who lived here in ancient times.

18. Pont du Gard

The Pont du Gard aqueduct is still today, as it has been over the centuries, a great tourist attraction. The monument impresses both in size and in the technique of realization, amazing for those times.

It is said that the invaders of the 5th century, amazed by the greatness of this monument, did not dare to destroy it.

The Gardon river passes under the aqueduct. In summer, near the aqueduct, tourists stop for a picnic, a beach, and a swim in the clear water of the river.

Entrance fee and visiting schedule Parking space is paid 18 euros/day. This fee is valid from 7:00 to 01:00. Between 01:00 - 7:00, a fee of 43 euros is charged. The parking lots are guarded.

Access is allowed, daily, starting at 7:00. The visitor center where there are shops and cultural-informative points opens at 9:00.

19. Loire Valley Castles

Let's start with the beginning of these famous landmarks in France: when it comes to castles and cultural heritage, the Loire Valley is the most spectacular area in the world, with over 60 palaces that are part of the UNESCO heritage.

This was the playground of the great kings of the time. They built Renaissance castles with impressive architecture, austere medieval fortresses, or fairytale mansions on the picturesque Valley of the Loire.

They are placed on either side of the famous river, which is more or less barren.

How to visit the Loire Valley?

There are several options, one more beautiful than the other, depending on what you want from this trip:

Cruise on the Loire River: The advantage is that you no longer pay for accommodation and you have everything insured, but most of the time the prices are quite high.

Road trip with a rented car: You can rent a car directly from Paris and you have the flexibility to make your route the way you want.

Organized tour on the Loire Valley by bus: most departures are from Blois and you get some discounts if you buy the complete package. A useful tip is that you can buy a travel package that will take you to the entrance to Blois and other castles in the area and thus you will save some money.

Caravan expedition: What will that sound like? It's a little crazier, but if you're into new experiences and adventure, we think it's a journey where you can consider this option.

Bike tour: There are many organized tours, the difficulty is medium, we are talking about 50 km a day, and the scenery is beautiful!

The good part is that this area is only 2 hours by car from Paris. If you are in Paris you are already close to the magical land. From here you can easily reach by bus, or train, in Blois or a little further south, in Tours, the places where the journey to the castles begins

20. The Millau Viaduct

Taller than the famous landmark in France, the Eiffel Tower, the height of the Millau Viaduct, at 343 meters, keeps its head high beyond the clouds.

Not only did it break several world records, but it was also declared one of the most beautiful bridges in the world.

While structurally it is the tallest, it is the 15th tallest bridge, depending on the height of the bridge, which was 270 meters. It turns out to be the largest road bridge that crosses the Tarn River valley in Europe at 886 feet.

This cable-stayed bridge is 2460 meters long and is considered iconic. It is overturned by visitors, so the speed limit here has been reduced from 130 km / h to 110 km / h to be safer and to allow tourists who will naturally reduce the speed of clicking on photos.

21. Chambord Castle

Chambord Castle is a French castle, the largest of the Loire castles, built in the heart of the largest closed forest park in Europe, 50 square kilometers, surrounded by a wall 32 kilometers long.
